I'm looking at buying a Dodge Stratus as a beater. It has a blown motor due to timing chain failure. Anybody know what happens to these when the chain lets go? Can I safely put a chain in it? Or do the valves kiss the pistons?

It doesn't look like it has a pretty ending. Clay

obviously youre concerned about mileage since youre considering a Stratus. personally, i would only consider buying a Camry or Accord. yeah, they cost more but by the time you rebuild an older Chevy/Ford/Dodge car you will end up with the same ammount of money invested. only difference is you wouldnt have needed to build a new car out of a Toyota or Honda.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to pass on the Dodge for now. I'm keeping my eyes open for something else.

I have my eye on 2003 cavalier. If the person would just get back to me.

I would like to find a Cavalier myself to upgrade from my Saturn. Mileage is great with the Saturn if you drive it like a grandma - I average 37 - 39 and have gotten 40. Saturn drivetrains seem to be pretty good it's just the rest of the car is basically a piece of crap. Clay

I don't want to "hate" on the Cavalier or the Saturn but those little 4 cylinder American cars are basically throw aways. You purchase them, do a little maint, drive them until they quit (which isn't long), then call the junk man and try to get .12 a pound. I'm not saying that you can't get some life out of one but most of the time they just fall apart before you get them paid for.
