I like you am all over the internet. I only post on a select few, occasionally responding, but much more controlled than the past, out of my realm of knowledge.

The reason I ask this is because on some other forums I'm finding that many are following the advice of a few that have a bazillion posts, have been here for years, can be seen on XYZracing.com, yet have no credibility to their claims as far as numerous, or any cars running X/at XXX mph. Look into their history and no or few cars what so ever. One "vet" in particular has one of the lower ETs, yet looking at the timeslip date is 8 years ago. They often drop good names, but I suspect its more to a bit of research than experience. Why spew advice on turbos, manual trans, gear ratios, etc all given freely with confidence, but again no real experience when you look into their past. No skin off my back, just hate to see the kids following a few that have cyber reputations without on real world builds.
Human nature?
Just curious as SmokmUp usually often has some of the best responses to technical questions, some of you are the most straight up car fanatics that actually race, tune, work on cars.
What makes a typical internet performance Guru?
1) number of posts/points/reputation or membership on prestigious forums
2) a one/ or dated history of low et/mph on a specific build
3) numerous builds, or advice that have proven themselves in independent testing

Your definition will vary as, after all this is the internet.

I think most of the really knowledgeable people don't say or post much. They keep their knowledge to themselves or at least don't want to explain themselves to others unless they can learn something from information sharing themselves.

honestly, i dont think there is a simple way to determine who knows their sh!t from those just blowing smoke up your arse (no pun intended). for example, look at Daves post/point count. no doubt he adds a lot of good info. then you have Knarley, who has a lot of knowledge but doesnt seem to share as much. opposite ends of the spectrum as far as post counts go. some people are just too buisy with life in general to answer a lot of questions while others simply enjoy a new mental challenge. i think that in order to find out who does and doesnt know what theyre talking about, you have to research their old posts and how they respond to other members when they are called out. of course, there are always the "nut swingers". the guys that wait until someone with a bit of credibility answers a post then jumps on the band wagon. they are easy to spot when you look at their post history. just like everything else, it all boils down to research.

I agree with 10sec.et. It's just like in real life, you have know someone for a while before you can find out what they know. We've all talked to people at a car show that know everything and can point out everything that is wrong with your car, BUT they don't have a thing at the show themselves - seems like they are always working on something killer though. Bottom line is you have to form you own opinion because it is your time and money you are investing. Most likely you don't know any of us (me included) so just look around for a while, there are lots of really smart people here and everywhere, experience will teach you who to listen too. Clay

Bingo! I can't agree with this more. Michelin actually has a pretty good quote that sums this same sentiment up - "None of us is as good as all of us." Too bad they seem to be forgetting that over the years - but that story is irrelevant. Another thing I have found that earns my respect is the ability of a person to admit fault or to say "I don't' know." Nobody knows everything and I'd rather someone admit that and find the answer for me that spin a line of BS on the spot to try and make themselves look better. Clay
