I wouldn't sweat 0.021" down in the hole if that is best you can do without buying new rods. The 409 ran pretty well with a flat head and the piston half way down the bore on one side.

well, i AM buying new rods. i just havent seriously considered custom lengths. unfortunately, my machinist is currently in the hospital so my project is on hold. i think im a curse on this poor guy. seems like everytime i have him do a motor, he gets REALLY sick. i think im going to have to find another machinist just to keep this guy healthy. hopefully, in a few days, he will be in better health and back to his old self.

the rods came in today. i actually saved nearly $300 on the set that i have. they are considered "cosmetically blemished". they are older production and have the name on the beam and have a slight irregularity on the ribs on the end of the cap.

the discoloration on the rod on the right is from a lamp next to the table.

the only clearance issue i can forsee is the roller cam. the Olds has pretty wide pan rails so i dont think there will be any issues there. ill find out for sure next week when i hand them to my machinist.

heres the specs....
