Ok, a friend of mine has a 200r4 out of a 83 lesabre wagon with a 307. It has been rebuilt including a new front pump. 1st thing, are all the 200's dual bolt pattern? He doesn't remember if it is. Second, are there any upgrades that I should do to put it behind my 500hp 383? I would need a stall converter around 2500-3000 rpms. Is that gonna be a problem at hiway speeds? It will have 3.73 gears in it when I put my 8.5 in it. Or should I just stay with my TH400?

This will be drove a lot in the summer..mostly around town but there are a few places out of town I would like to drive it. (several 100 miles) Which is why I was looking into getting a 700 or a 200, for the overdrive.

That is the nice thing about modern overdrive trannies. regardless of stall speed on the highway it will lockup completely when the solenoid is engaged (you can wire it to a toggle button or leave it at the preset 45 MPH).

The 200R4 has lots of HD parts available to handle 500 HP but it won't be as cheap to build as a 700R4 because there are more people making parts (which means more competition to sell them cheaper) for the 700 than the 200.

The 200R4 has a universal bell housing that will bolt up to any GM car engine.

So you recommend using the lockup..not removing it? It looks as if I would go the 700r4 route if it is gonna be cheaper.

A local guy with a good rep told me he could do it for around $800 if I brought him the tranny. That would be with the better sprag, updated clutches, vette servo..plus some other stuff that I dont remember off hand.

I've been using a lock-up 3600 RPM stall in front of my 4L80E with out a problem behind a 750 horse engine in a lead sled of a car. Just have to remember to disengage the lock-up when running slicks and it will work fine.

I've also got a lock-up in my 700R4 behind my 500+ horse 406 have had no worries and love driving daily with a 3.73 gear, and a 2,600 RPM converter.

Lockup converter all the way. You can have a nice stall for launching the car and lock it up when cruising around.

It all depends on who builds the tranny.. I have a TH200R4 and I run 10 seconds flat in the 1/4 mile with it at over 131 mph... Put 190+ passes on my 200R4 without ANY issues..

My TH200R4 was built by Art Carrs business:

Those trannies will hold up to over 800 HP..
