I am building a new 355 SB Chevy and can't decide on which head to use. I already have everything but the heads. The pistons are flat tops with 4 valve reliefs. I am afraid that the new Vortec heads with 64 cc chambers will yield a compression ratio higher than 87 octane will take. My cam is very mild 194/204 at 0.050". What do you guys think?

what does the compression ratio work out to with 64cc's? What's your budget for heads?

The compression would probably be between 9.9 to 10.5 depending on head gasket thickness, deck hieght and cc of piston reliefs. My brothers 357 has right at 11.0-1 w/ 62cc heads,0 deck height and .037 head gasket. Why not use 92 octane?$$$$ ?

I ran the numbers like heavychevys says the compression will be around 10:1 which you should be able to get away with on 92 octane gas. I'm guessing that you'll be able to run on 87 octane with about 9.5:1 or less on iron heads. If your dead set against the vortec's Ive heard good things about World products S/R heads.

I'm not a GM guy but those vortec heads really work. And with swirl tech. GM squeezes' more out of less octane. I'd consider the V head.

are those pistons like a 6 cc valve pocket???
is it zero decked??

i had problems with 9.59 to 1 and a bigger cam (230&236@.050 110lsa)
60 over 350 vortec headded

i had to add some 110 to my 92 octane to get it not to ping with my timming at its most aggressive curve

if that is the stock truck cam you will have problems 111lsa
