Just ordered the parts to refresh the 400. Never ran ALTO and always the stock red clutches. The Kolene steels are something I have never run also. I guess the grinder with 36 grit will be the thing.
The 400 in the car has lasted since I joined this site and I am amazed it lasted this long with the brake leaving at 5500 with the old converter and 6800 on the one we have had for the last 3 years. I just wonder how many trans has lived this long in a racing situation.

Thatís pretty good. Iíve had the trans in
my car for a while 10+ years Iím guessing. New engine might have its way with it but it is holding up. Rearend as you know from my posts gave up/leaked after 32 years of service. I guess if you build them right and maintain things they hold together. I never put a grinder to any of the clutches or steels when servicing a trans just the main application plate or apply piston for clearance. Very cool though that it lasted that long. One thing in its favor is vehicle weight that car is pretty light isnít it? Stock shafts in that or vasco/300M?

Stock shaft with a TCI 2.75 low gear I thought would never last. Going to put a blanket on it with the shield so I have a son if shit hits the fan. The parts came in and look good. the trans should be out next week.

Cool. I had one of those 2.75 gear sets on my T350 but I wasn't too impressed with the set because it was missing a support bushing for the planetary gear set which left it just floating around in the ring gear. I wonder if it is the same or different? If it is working good for you it must be different.

Everything was good except the forward clutch was metal to metal! Can't believe it even held the brake at all. Put all new clutches and steels in along with seals. We will see if we ever get the JW back from Florida with the new tag.....

Reminds of when I first started out with a 283 in a '55. Of course back then I could buy a replacement 283 for $35 to $50 bucks, and race again the next weekend. Just had to swap heads and install my Crane solid cam in preparation of blowing it up again. Didn't need a shift light; when it bounced off the peg of my ten grand SUN tach I shifted (assuming it stayed together).
