For the 79 camaro. Since you are stealing the cars engine for your boat, I figure you must have plans for a power plant in the camaro. Do tell. |

I have my eye on a LQ4 / 4L80E combo. Initially the swap will be just the conversion. After that's done I'd like to twin (or single) turbo it. _________________ Stop running from your pain and embrace your pain. Your pain is going to be a part of your prize.

Why a 4L80E instead of the lighter with less parasitic losse 4L65E? Is the LQ4 6.0 liter going to make that much torque? I am talking about at the hit of the throtle, unless you are thinking of launching off of a trans brake at full boost.

I want a transmission that can stand up to the power I will eventually throw at it. For now it's over kill, hopefully in the future it will be just right. _________________ Stop running from your pain and embrace your pain. Your pain is going to be a part of your prize.

Well the 4L80E is a great tranny. I doubt you will ever break one. But it is big (trans tunnel massage is a possibility), and heavy, and suffers all off the parasitic losses of the TH400 it is based upon (uses some of the same parts inside).
Plus side it is fully programmable. That includes telling it to lock up reverse and first simultaneously for your trans brake. You can also control how hard it hits (no accumulator), when it shifts (no shift kit needed, or governor springs), and you have a fifth gear with the lock up converter (it takes all of the slippage out of your loose converter).

I put a 4L80E in a 94 Bird. Minor pounding on the tunnel, no big deal. |

Don't the 4L80E have the support mount right on the tailshaft? _________________ Stop running from your pain and embrace your pain. Your pain is going to be a part of your prize.
